Deep within the mesmerizing rolling fields, resided a young shepherd. His life was pure, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to care for his flock of ewes.

Their low murmuring and the whispering of the gales across the solo tree on the mountaintop were his main associates. Day upon day, looking out for his responsibilities inculcated in him a notion of tranquil contentment.

However, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.

Narratives of wild beasts hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy chose to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.

One afternoon he raced into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The scared villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but discovered no wolf.

The boy giggled at the dilemma on their faces. This trick continued for a few days more. Yet, one day, a real wolf did come here to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy ran for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.

Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his flock. Heartbroken, he returned to the village only to receive a scolding on honesty and the results of false alarms.

The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of crying wolf. Moreover, it emphasizes how trust once broken, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
